Design Studio and Illustration Craft

Where every idea
is measured, ruled
and Drawn with care.

A Line and Feather LLC is a drafting studio and illustration craft working from its East Circle studio in St George, Utah. We are the line between a rough idea and a finished thing of use: the place where technical drafting meets the loose, human hand of illustration.

We turn vague beginnings into finished plates that communicate with clarity and stay true to the original intention. A brand mark must be remembered. A diagram must be understood at a glance. A map must carry a stranger home. A lettering must sound like the company that wears it. Each of these is a small problem of drawing, and drawing is what we do all day from the drafting board on the East Circle.

Every project begins with a clean sheet, a sharp pencil, and a conversation about what the finished drawing really needs to say. Then we measure, rule, and rework it until the line is honest. What you receive is not a scatter of guesses but a considered plate, drawn the way a careful craftsman draws: once for the idea, twice for the eye, and a final pass for the printer, the sign maker, and the years ahead.

Whether your project is a single wordmark, a busy technical manual, or a full identity for a young company, we sit down with you at the board and help you see it clearly before a single mark is committed to ink.

The Working Series

Five plates from the drafting stool, each one drawn for a different purpose.

A single studio cannot be all things to all corners, so we have kept our craft deliberately narrow and deep. Each plate below names one kind of drawing we practice with real concentration, the kind of work where experience shows in the finished line. Read them as a portfolio of skill rather than a menu of all that might be sold. If you need something we do not draw well, we would rather tell you honestly and point you toward a studio that will serve you, because a good reputation is built on honest referrals at least as much as on finished marks.

Brand Identity and Logo Design

We study the purpose of your venture before a single mark is placed, because a logo that fits works and a logo that ignores the business will not last no matter how pretty it looks. We begin by asking the hard questions about your audience, your difference, and the places your mark must live, and only then do we reach for the pencil.

The resulting symbol is drawn to hold weight under any use, from a favicon at a few pixels to a sign measured in feet. The identity is delivered as a full set of working files, style guidance and the reasoning behind every line, so that your own team understands the mark well enough to protect it. We keep the palette disciplined and the construction honest, so the mark survives ink, screen and stone without losing its voice.

Technical Illustration and Diagrams

Clear instruction saves time, money and temper, which is why we draft diagrams that respect the reader rather than the ego of the person who drew them. When a machine is opened in front of a newcomer, or a process is shown to a nervous client, the drawing is the whole teaching, and it must earn that trust in a single quiet look.

From assembly sequences to cutaway views, we break machinery and process into ordered layers that make sense at a glance, stripping away everything that would confuse and keeping every sign that would guide. Each drawing is checked against the source so nothing is lost between the real object and the page, and the file we hand you is ready to place into the manual, the screen, or the training room exactly where your people need it.

Editorial and Book Illustration

Pages are drawn as much as they are written, and our illustrations give printed words a steady visual voice that carries a reader from one spread to the next. A book is a long journey, and its figures are the landmarks along the way; a good one should make the text easier, never busier.

We work within the measure and grid of your book so every figure settles comfortably among the type, and we honour the tone you have set, whether it is the quiet exactness of a technical reference or the warmer character of a trade title. Whether the art is technical or narrative, it arrives sized, placed and ready for press, with any production notes a printer may need, so your schedule is not held hostage by last-minute adjustments.

Map and Wayfinding Design

People find their way by habit and by good signs, and our maps are built to spare them a wrong turn rather than to decorate a lobby. A stranger reads a map under mild pressure, unsure of where the next step leads, and the drawing has moments, not minutes, to set them right.

We draft site plans, route guides and orientation boards that keep true scale while staying readable across walls and pages, weighing every landmark, distance and arrow so that a visitor always knows which way to face. Legibility wins over cleverness here. We test the drawing as a traveller would, following its own directions from start to finish, and we edit until the path is plain even to someone who has never crossed your threshold before.

Custom Lettering and Wordmarks

A wordmark is a logo set in a voice of its own, built letter by letter rather than borrowed from a shelf of ready-made type. We shape every stroke with that voice in mind, so the name begins to sound like the company the moment your eye rests on it.

We consider weight, spacing and rhythm until the name reads as confidently alone as it does beside the rest of the page, because a signature is judged most harshly in the small spaces of a business card and the far corner of a building. The result is a compact drawing your sign-makers and printers can repeat with ease, supplied in clean curves that survive every production machine it will ever meet.

A record kept the way a draftsman keeps it: in finished plates, not promises.

200
plates drawn
34
studio programs live
9
years at the board
97%
client approval

These are the numbers we can count honestly. They do not describe every sketch that ended in the bin, which is where most of a good drawing happens, but they do record the work that stayed on the board until it was steady enough to hand over. Behind each plate sits a brief, a conversation, several false starts, and the quiet satisfaction of watching the finished line finally behave.

What we believe at the board

We believe a drawing is a kind of promise made in ink: it says the idea was understood, considered and rendered so that others might see it clearly. Our work lives at the meeting of the ruled line and the loose hand, where precision and warmth share the same clean sheet.

Too much of the design world shouts for attention; we would rather earn a held gaze. A mark should be clear the first time, remembered the second, and trusted from then on. That restraint is not a lack of ambition. It is ambition pointed at the thing that matters, which is whether the drawing serves the person who must understand it, use it, or find their way by it.

A drawing done for its own sake is a hobby. A drawing done for a client and a deadline is a craft, and craft is what we practice from the drafting board on the East Circle in St George, one honest plate at a time.

Pencil to paper

Your idea deserves a finished plate.

Send us the rough version of what you are building, a brief that is still finding its feet, or even a note that only describes the shape of the problem in plain words. We will show you how it reads once it is measured, ruled and drawn, and we will tell you plainly what we think it will take.

A conversation costs nothing, takes only a little of your time, and often sets the direction for everything that follows. There is no pressure to buy and no fine print to sign; there is only a studio that would rather draw a good thing slowly than a poor thing fast, and that would be glad to talk with you about which one your project deserves.
